Project Corner – Dan’s LEDs

Your newsletter editor continues to prove the homebuilt aircraft axiom that ‘once a project, always a project’. After more than 14 years and 1200 flight hours, the most recent ‘bright idea’ was to replace the RV-10’s Whelen xenon strobes and incandescent position lights with “The Works” LED lighting kit from FlyLEDs in Australia. The new configuration has 3 LED landing spotlights, 6 LED strobe lights, and 12 LED position lights on each wingtip. They are so bright a cell phone can’t take a photo of them lit, and even with sunglasses it’s painful to look at them. They light up a half mile of runway at night and look like Disney’s Electric Light Parade aloft. And total current draw = 4 amps at 14 volts. Magic!
