Holy hot dog… it’s 100 degrees outside! Who is thinking about Christmas already? Well, we are, because we need to set the date down early. Expect it to be held once again at Cattlemens Restaurant in Roseville.

We held our first Airport Fun Day back in April and it was unexpectedly popular with the local community. Time for another one, then! We’ll have some static aircraft displays, some booths from local aviation schools and organizations, activities for kids from three to thirty, and more stuff too. Better yet, a free hot dog lunch for all attendees. Spread the word. Our Airport Fun Day will be held from 11:00 to 14:00. More information coming in August; we will need a high level of chapter volunteer participation for a successful event. Please plan to set aside a few hours on that date. Don’t say you have not been warned…

Our July monthly member meeting will be held at the chapter hangar at the Lincoln Airport on Wednesday evening, July 17th. We’ll start with a BBQ dinner at 18:00 with all the fixings that we can find. Expect a warm evening but we’ll keep the air moving with our new fans and hope for a cooling delta breeze…unlikely but one never knows. We will have a short business meeting that will begin at about 18:45 or so.
At about 19:15, Scott Thompson will present a program on what it took to build an RV-8. The RV series of airplanes almost single-handedly revitalized sport aviation, but what is involved in actually taking on a project that results in the construction of a very capable and high performance sport airplane? Well, we’ll just talk about that thing. Even if you have never considered building an airplane, some of the process and techniques might prove interesting.

EAA chapter 1541 will hold its second IMC club meeting on Wednesday, July 10th from 19:00 – 20:00 in the chapter hangar. All pilots are invited, whether instrument rated or not, to share their knowledge and experience with one another. These one hour sessions begin with a brief video scenario provided by EAA national that depicts an actual flight that encountered challenges. As an attendee you’ll be asked to put yourself “in the pilot’s seat” and think about what you would have done in the same situation. The result promises some interesting and educational discussions among ourselves.
We hope to see you there!

As many of you may know, our chapter provided support to the City of Lincoln’s Recreation Department by hosting a specialty Aviation Summer Camp this past week. It was held Monday through Friday each afternoon, with seven kids from the Lincoln community attending. The camp was organized and run by chapter members Dan and Linda Masys, with the able assistance of Bruce Estes, Dug Smith, and Amy Whelan. By all accounts it was a energized and successful week for the camp attendees. Each of the five days had a theme: Monday was airport tour day; Tuesday was fixed wing day; Wednesday was rotorcraft/gyroplane day; Thursday was lighter-than-air day; and the week culminated in Young Eagle flights for the participants on Friday. The camp was held at our chapter hangar; the week started off on the hot side temperature-wise but, fortunately for all, cooled down a bit as the week went on. Thank you to the five volunteers from the chapter that made the week a success.
