Happy New Year! Our first chapter event of 2022 will be our monthly IMC/VMC club online meeting, from 7 to 8 pm on Thursday, January 6th.

Our special topic will be the current status and future of VOR-based navigation. Though we’ve all become accustomed to using GPS for inflight guidance, we know it can be subject to disruptions. CFII Scott Thompson will discuss how the FAA intends to provide a usable ground-based alternative to GPS nationwide into the future. The VMC portion of our meeting will be a “What Would You Do?” scenario of a VFR night flight that encounters unforecast snow.

The Lincoln Regional Airport Display Day will be held this Saturday, December 18th, at KLHM. The weather is going to be cloudy and cool with a temperature of 49F and a chance of rain. The display day crew will be there but should the weather require it, they will move the administrative portion and coffee into the Pilots Lounge.

Two Display Day members have stepped up to the plate and are taking their turn helping out running the event. Jack Allison and Tim Harrigan will be the coordinators to sign paper work and answer any questions so please make sure to thank them for stepping up. Consider doing the same and sign up for a future Display Day Saturday – the work party list will be there to sign up.

For your “Aircraft of Historical Significance” to earn a display day credit it must be displayed for a four hour period, so the display day begins at 0800 and ends at 1200 hours at LHM. Dust off your bird, bring it out for display, and don’t forget to get your paperwork signed.

The Display Day effort continues to need help. Please consider helping (especially those who directly benefit from the tax exemption).

IMC/VMC club will move to its new day of Thursday, still starting at 7 pm. This coming Thursday, Dec. 2nd the IMC club portion of the program will be a tutorial on how to read and interpret each of the elements of an IFR approach chart. The VMC club portion will be a “What Would You Do?” scenario where there are blue skies everywhere but too much snow on the ground the day after a winter storm.

San Carlos Flight Center invites CFI Lukasz Zoromski to share his experiences with winter flying in Wisconsin, his home state. In this seminar, he will discuss pre-flight planning and procedures that you may need to perform during the winter, such as careful consideration of the freezing level and how to properly remove frost and ice from your aircraft. He will also go over how to keep you and your passengers safe and comfortable in the cockpit during flight, and how to respond to potential in-flight emergencies related to icing. Finally, he will discuss the additional steps that must be taken after your flight to ensure that your airplane is ready to go for the next winter flight.
