Request for Ground Crew – Young Eagles Rally 5-12-2018

Our EAA chapter will be hosting two Young Eagles Rallies, the first on Saturday, May 12, and another in September.

Please let us know if you can help with this event.

We need folks to staff all of the positions;

  • set up; signs, ropes, barriers, tables, chairs, etc.
  • parking and directions to the NorCal Flight Center conference room for sign-in.
  • at the gazebo, check in of Y.E. children and parents, for scheduling – a white board, pilot/ aircraft and Y.E.
  • pre-flight briefing
  • ramp guides for pilots and Y.E.
  • post flight flight logs and certificates

We are also in need of more pilots and aircraft. We need at least 6, maybe more if the response is great!

Young Eagles Are Coming

We are happy to announce that Chapter 1541 has scheduled two Young Eagle Rallies for 2018, the first on Saturday, May 12, and the second on Saturday, September 29. For those few who may not be familiar, Young Eagles is an EAA program designed to introduce young people to aviation by offering a short, free airplane ride. The program was launched in 1992 and, nationwide, has provided well over 2 million rides. Our chapter has conducted several Young Eagles Rallies in years past and we’re going to move forward with Rallies this year also.

So what does this mean to you, the chapter member? Well, we need volunteers to help make this event a success. Volunteers are needed for pilots, ground handlers and event helpers. As you can see in the information provided below, the tasks are simple and will provide an opportunity to interact with the community in a positive way.

Our plans are still developing, but we expect that the May 12 Rally will be conducted between 8 am and 2 pm on Saturday. If plans materialize, we will also be offering a BBQ lunch in the late morning.

The Rally organizers need to determine which pilots in our chapter are currently qualified to participate as Young Eagle pilots. This would mean that you are on record with EAA headquarters with a completed and current background check. If you are such a pilot, have access to an airplane, and have interest in participating in our chapter’s Young Eagles Rallies, please let us know. We are making a list. (If you are not sure you are a currently qualified pilot, please contact us and we will help you find out).

Now, let’s look at what it takes to become a volunteer at our chapter Rallies.

Young Eagle Pilots:

  • Be a current EAA member and hold an appropriate airman’s certificate (Sport Pilot or greater)
  • Possess a current medical certificate (if applicable)
  • Be current to carry passengers in the aircraft you plan to use
  • Have a current BFR
  • Complete the simple online Young Eagles training course and basic background check, both of which need to have been completed within the last three years
  • For our events, have access to an aircraft that meets EAA requirements and has passenger liability insurance, preferably in amount that exceeds $100,000 per seat. (This amount allows a supplemental EAA policy to provide additional liability insurance.)
  • For our events, be a EAA Chapter 1541 member.

Young Eagle Ground Support (primarily helping Young Eagles to and from the airplane, providing ramp control, and ensuring ramp safety):

We have need for other event helpers too:

  • Support for a BBQ Lunch
  • Welcome table for registration and check-in
  • Aircraft dispatchers to match pilots/Young Eagles
  • Chapter information table
  • Chapter members to answer questions and meet new friends
  • Other stuff we are working on

For our May 12 Rally, we are early in the planning stages, but we will be going out to the Lincoln and larger community in a variety of ways to reach young people and spark some interest in aviation. Local schools, scouting, and other youth groups will be contacted to spread the word into the community. From our end, we are looking for a small cadre of volunteers to put this activity together. For the day of the event, we are looking for a larger group of help from our chapter members. It should be a well run and organized event so no one person will be overloaded and we will all have a good time.

Please respond to this if you want to get involved early, but the point of this post is to let you know about the events and allow everybody to start looking toward May 12 as one of our chapter’s main events for 2018.

We look forward to having a good time at an event that spreads the word about the exciting things to be found in aviation.

Young Eagles Report

Thanks to all the volunteers! A very successful day despite weather that almost kept us on the ground. We had 11 pilots, and the same number of ground volunteers. There were 63 kids registered, and 45 of them showed up and flew. Over 100 people who have never been to Lincoln were exposed to the airport.

We had to turn away 20 sign ups in the last couple of days. So, we can get 40-75 kids signed up each event with 30-50 shows. From now on, the pancake breakfast will be on the 3rd Saturday of each month, and the next Young Eagles event will most likely be in February, due to the winter weather.

Young Eagles on Sunday

Things are looking good. There are 57 YE’s are signed up to come down at 8 AM on Sunday.

We could use 2-3 more volunteers on the ground, and maybe 1-2 pilots if we can get ’em.

We will start cooking around 08:30, and people can grab pancakes, sausage, eggs as they desire throughout morning. Coffee will be made as well. Anybody from EAA willing to make coffee?

Everyone should arrive around 07:15-07:30. We are using Greg Forbes Hangar in Zack’s building for everything.

We need:

  1. Have someone with trailer hitch bring the EAA trailer of chairs and tables, etc down.
  2. Pickup yellow airplane model for instruction
  3. Setup tables and chairs
  4. Setup Grill at 07:30 and get coffee going
  5. Get food going by 08:30 (1-2 people cooking)
  6. Get all kids flowing through registration table to sign their form (1 person on table)
  7. Get them flying with someone (1 person will marshal kids out to planes)
  8. Instruct the kids on a basic ground lesson for about 30-45 mins 08:45 and on (1-2 people)
  9. Provide chaperones to go out and look at the display aircraft (1-2 people taking them out in groups for safety)
  10. Print completion certificates and fill out their souvenir logbooks in Norcal Office. (you can endorse as instruction if you are a CFI if you want) (1 person)

Display aircraft such as Richard Ryan’s Jenny, an Eclipse jet, 2-3 warbirds, Gary’s Piet, and any other plane that someone wants to bring down for display, will be on the South Transient ramp, as well. Please bring your planes out! We want to keep all planes in one place and away from the traffic and flow of the fuel pumps, so head South. If you are responsible for tugging any of them, take them to the first couple of rows where there is space.

11 pilots are registered, but more are welcome!
– please park planes on South side of South transient spots. Bring your medical, pilot cert, and EAA card – they’ll be photocopied in the office and you’ll sign the pilot form.

There is going to be a lot of flying on Sunday morning!

8 ground volunteers are registered, but more are welcome!

Young Eagles update

Things have evolved rapidly. We have 47 kids signed up! We have stopped registration. We’ll need more pilots and planes. With good weather expected, we’re expecting everybody to show up.

Currently have 9 pilots, with all three flight school planes rented.

We need more volunteers.

We need another 5 people above this to ensure a smooth, safe event. Yes, there is a chance you may be standing around a little bit, but what better place to do it than around planes, other pilots, and kids wanting to learn about aviation!

Young Eagles event on Saturday

As most of you will recall from the last chapter meeting, this Saturday is the Young Eagles event at LHM. Beside the pilots, volunteers are needed for escorts, gate duty, etc…

Anyone who wishes to participate should report to the gazebo near the fuel pumps at 08:00. The event is scheduled to run from 9 am – 1 pm.

EAA 1541 Young Eagles Flight

From the President:

I just want to thank everyone who helped to make our first Young Eagles program a huge success today! I believe we flew over 19 Young Eagles. To see the smiles on the faces of kids today and their appreciation was nothing short of fantastic!
It’s my understanding that our breakfast was not only delicious but was also very much a success. I know we had at least 2 new members join our chapter today. If you were not here today you missed a great event and I hope you can make the next one. Again, my heart felt thank you to all the members who worked on this great event! The kids will never forget it. See you next month with all the final numbers!

We’re posting pictures of the event.
